Whiteboard Survey

In my Tech Innovation Leadership course I experimented with a survey form for ranking interactive whiteboard (IWB) use in the classroom. The form described six categories of use, and was meant to be used for the kind of survey called a walkthrough. In a walkthrough, a surveyor visits a classroom briefly, just for enough time to determine what is happening with the IWB at that moment.

After several walkthroughs the surveyor then ranks the six categories from 1 (little or no use) to 7 (most frequent use). Each category represents a level of use: inconsequential use, or low, mid, and high levels of transfer and engagement. The goal is to analyze the quality of IWB use over a period of time and across a number of classrooms.

Initially I did not perform an actual walkthrough, but pretended to. I ranked usage in my own school based on my sense of how IWB’s were being used. This sense came from conversations, in-school workshops, and occasional observations. Eventually, wondering what an actual survey might reveal, I designed and implemented a small walkthrough survey in my school.
